Challenge Day 1

Hello, dolls! IT’S THE END OF THE SEMESTER! Woot woot!

Alsooo Day 1 of my Project RISE Challenge and I’ve been absolutely KILLING IT. I am running like a lean, mean, Google calendar and planner abiding machine. Tackled everything on my to-do list. Established a budget. Went to the gym. Planned out my entire summer and did soo well on my final exam. Not only that, but I was vlogging, and tweeting, and now I’m posting on here. I’m very proud of myself.

With the vlogs, I need to find a video editor and get a few videos up, but when I do, I’ll share the link with here. Until then, I’ll just be filming and compiling video clips!

On top of everything good that’s happening today, I learned that in August, I might be going to Miami so that’s extra motivation to get into the gym. I want a bikini bod! I made a workout schedule and I’m very very excited to get started on it.

What I’m really worried about is that all this motivation is just my pre-period phase. You see, every month right before my period comes (like a week), my hormones kick into like some superhero mode and I am very committed to completing whatever I set my mind to. I get shit done. I magically evolve from a potato to someone with laser focus, extreme dedication, and an abundance of energy. I don’t know what it is.

I’ve thought about it in a couple ways and I actually think that’s the perfect time to start this challenge because it’s an extra boost to help me get my routine down. Once the hormones cycle through and die down a bit, it’ll be harder to keep up with everything, but at least I’ll hopefully have a routine established by then so it won’t be as hard as it could be. If that makes any sense..

At any rate, Day 1 of Project RISE is going fabulously. I’m excited to be kicking it off on such a good note! Hopefully I can keep up this motivation! If you started a challenge, how has your Day 1 been going? I wanna hear about it!

Enjoy the Process

You set a goal. You give yourself a time frame. You try to stick with it everyday. You give yourself a challenge to reach that goal. When you reach it, you’re incredibly happy and proud of yourself. You carry on with life, keeping the progress you made or regressing (hopefully the first one, but the latter happens sometimes, too. It’s okay to admit it!).

What I describe above is the motions of self improvement. None of the above is the reason why I self improvement challenges so much and why I frequently develop them for myself. My favorite part about them is the process of change.

Through my self improvement, I gain extraordinary life experiences and memories. For example, my last self improvement took place after my ex and I broke up. It was a serious 2 year relationships and we were good friends before that so it definitely impacted me emotionally to lose someone I was so close with. The challenge I gave myself was to prove to myself that I was worthy of love and that I could love myself. Having suffered from major self-esteem issues when I was younger, mixed in with a little anxiety, and an incredible amount of social awkwardness, this was the first time in my life that I was really trying to tackle the core issue: I was not comfortable with myself and I did not see anything positive about myself.

I gave myself a list of things to accomplish before my next relationship. Things that made me embrace my personality, awkwardness, and quirks in all of my life categories. The things on the list were things like climb a mountain by yourself (shout out to Mt. Tammany for a great view and a great hike!), eat a restaurant alone (Ramen Nagomi, you weren’t good, but thanks for helping me with one), go to the city by yourself (best trip to date, to be honest), and become Yelp Elite (2 years under my belt, baby!). It also had things like get over my phobia of working out at a public gym, talk to strangers at bars, and strike up conversations with random strangers.

And by going through all these challenges, I found what it means to live life. I experienced things and I have memories that I would never have had without going through the process of this challenge. I’ve danced on bar tops in NYC, I’ve met the most inspiring people by talking to strangers, I’ve found the craziest places by trying to become Yelp Elite, and I have a newfound confidence in myself. I broke down the mental restrictions that I gave myself. I post selfies on Snapchat, for goodness sakes! I would have never done that before because I used to care about people thinking that it was narcissistic and I didn’t think I was pretty enough, but now I don’t give a flying fuck! The picture taken with this post was actually me trying soup dumplings for the first time at this run down little place in town. I never would have wandered had I not been open to new experiences and I posted this picture on Instagram, which is also something I never would have done before!

The thing that I love about self improvement challenges is that it pushes you to the edge of your comfort zone and in the process, you gain these incredible life experiences which naturally changes you as a person even if at the end of your challenge, you don’t reach your goal in the end or whatever change you tried to make doesn’t end up sticking. Just beginning the process has an effect on your personality, your mind, and your growth as a person.

I encourage everyone to make challenges for themselves. Life is more than just school or work. You have to think about you, too!

The Challenge: Project RISE

Hello, lovelies! So I’ve been thinking about goals and growth and with the end of the semester approaching in 3 short days, I was thinking about doing a challenge to jump start my self improvement category. Usually when I start changing behaviors, I start with baby steps and work my way up to the behavior that I want, but I have found that if the steps are too small, I get bored easily. I need something big. Something epic. Something challenging.
Thus the challenge was born. 
I’m calling it Project RISE AKA Releasing the Inner Super Emsy. I’m working on improving something in all life categories and I’m going to be documenting my journey here on this blog. The habits I’ll be adopting/goals I’m striving for are as follows:
Career
  • Have a solid resume
  • Have a CV started
  • Have a place to write down accomplishments, organization projects and dates of membership
  • Have a bank of interview question and answers to draw from
  • Get an internship in New York for the summer 2018

Academics

  • Review MedChem this summer
  • Start looking at some of the P2 spring class material

Relationships

  • Family: call mom every Mon, dad every Wed, sister every Friday to establish a stronger relationship with them
  • Family: go home or try your best to go home every holiday or birthday
  • Friends: maintain list of close caring friends
  • Friends: reach out to someone who isn’t on that list and develop a relationship with them
  • Professional relationships: identify professors that you want to develop a professional relationship with
  • Professional relationships: plan way to develop those connections

Finances

  • Develop a budget and stick to it
  • Pay off credit card debt
  • Pay part of student loans at least once a month
  • Know net worth
  • Have a finance tracker
  • Develop a budget friendly, streamlined grocery list
  • No frivolous spending

The Self

  • Mental health: incorporate yoga – start with once a month
  • Mental health: start a gratitude journal
  • Physical health: Go to gym at least 3x a week
  • Physical health: develop split and stick with it
  • Physical health: go to gym in the morning
  • Physical health: set up doctors appointments in advanced and put on Google calendar
  • Physical health: find doctors and understand what is covered on your health insurance
  • Self Improvement: stick with this challenge for the duration of the summer
  • Self Improvement: read one book a month
  • Self Improvement: Do all the things in your planner’s to do list every day the best you can
  • Self Improvement: Blog consistently during the challenge
  • Self Improvement: start Youtube channel vlogs
  • Self Improvement: Tweet a motivational mindset quote or something to put you in a positive, inspired, motivated mindset every morning
  • Self Improvement: Monthly reflections on how self improvement is going and the progress

I know, I know. You’re thinking, damn girl, this is A LOT OF THINGS to change at once!!! But I need it. I feel like I need to go for it and make a splash. I feel like it’s a lot and if some habits don’t stick throughout the four months, that’s fine, at least some will and some is better than nothing. Also I’ve tried the “baby steps” method before and it just doesn’t work me. I never actually change.

But this time it’s different. I don’t have school in my way. I’m good! Wish me luck and if this inspires you to do your own challenge, I’m all for it! I wanna hear about it! Of course, your goals and habits aren’t going to be exactly like mine, but personalize it and stick with it. We’re in this together, friends!! Good luck!

Life Categories

One of the things that I think is really important for everyone to identify is their life categories. These are just different aspects of your life that you care about. From past experiences, I learned that it’s very important to do this so that when you come to a failure or a difficult situation in life, you can compartmentalize. That is, you can put your situation in a category and objectively look at things. You can assess that you are doing bad in that category, but in other aspects of your life, you’re doing okay. It helps to absorb some of the shock and motivates you to work on that weakness category as opposed to just throwing in the towel and saying life is horrible all around. There was actually a study done that found that people who compartmentalized had higher self esteem because they didn’t let negative affects spill over

For example, here are my life categories:

1. Career – this is anything to do with preparing for my future career and when I do start working in the “real world,” this will be anything that pertains to that. This includes any interviews that I get for internships or anything like that. It also includes part time jobs that I have right now.

2. Academics I’m in pharmacy school so this is things like studying, exams, grades, research projects, and just making it through graduation. After I graduate, things that are related to continuing education or maybe another degree is going to fall into this category.

3. Relationships – This is actually divided into subcategories for me: family, friends, and professional relationships. If I were dating or actively searching to be a in a relationship, that would be the fourth subcategory, but I’m not right now so that’s not considered an active category for me. But this is pretty self explanatory. This has anything to do with maintaining and keeping relationships.

4. Finances – I hate this category, but I know that it’s important. Also a self explanatory category.

5. The Self So this is broken down into a couple subcategories as well. The first is Mental Health and has to do with keeping my mind and spirit sane. This might be things like incorporating mindful meditating or journaling into my daily routine. Things that keep my mind healthy. The next subcategory is physical health so, things like workout schedules and doctor checkups. The last category is Self Improvement. That is things like am I working on learning a new skill that I’ve always wanted to learn? What’s my progress on my reading list and what are some more titles I want to put on that? Am I actively working on a personal weakness? Things like that. 

As said earlier, identifying the different categories in your life really help prepare you to compartmentalize when you need to. It can also be a great way to start identifying some of your personal strengths and weaknesses in an organized matter since you already have defined categories of aspects in your life that are important to you.
